Accessibility Survey: Creates User-File for MedURC

The Accessibility Survey can be thought of as a fifth file that is used by the MedURC Interface Generator. Unlike the four other files that describe the Target device, this file describes the abilities and preferences of the user. It is generated by having the user (or someone on their behalf) complete a simple software program, currently called an Accessibility Survey, which collects information about users’ abilities and preferences, and saves such information in a accessibility and preferences XML file.

A PocketPC (or desktop simulation of a PocketPC) is currently used to take this survey, which consists of 3-screen “abilities” section and a 5-screen “preferences” section, where the latter relates primarily to preferences for types of computer interface controls. There is also the opportunity to consider some of the intrinsic accessibility features within Windows.

The user then has the opportunity to iteratively operate the program with their preferences in use, so as to experience what it is like and then interact with the program to make any changes. The user then exists the program when (s)he feels that the types of choices for interfaces are satisfactory. These preferences include font size, audio or visual cues, type of font, etc.
