Program D1 / Tools for Usability and Accessibility Analysis:

Protocol Manager

The Protocol Manager of MU-Lab serves to help guide the team through the process of a systematic accessibility analysis for a given medical instrument that is to be used by a collection of subjects.

This web-based tool is available through this site, but is password-protected because of the need for confidentiality of human subjects data.

The PM protocol and questionnaires were designed by an interative process, over the course of very large number of meetings between the Wisconsin and California teams. We believe it to be not only be the best available tool for accessibility analysis, but also one of the most thorough protocols available for any type of usabilility analysis. Our Advisory Board has indicated that there is substantial intellectual property associated with this tool, but we choose to fully disseminate it "as is" and anticipate that as the user base grows it will continue to be improved. The parts of the Protocol Manager follow:

Before testing:

I. Problem Statement for "Parent" Medical Instrumentation

    1. This typically is based on previous R1 needs assessment results. In some cases there will be a "parent" class of technology with instances of "children" devices that are under evaluation

II. Advance Preparation

    1. Understand all aspects of Instrument Usage
    2. Universal Design Analysis (may need to be completed for each "child" device)
      1. Patient perspective (sensory, cognitive, physical, assistive technology accommodation, error tolerance, equitability, then device-specific questions)
      2. Provider perspective
    3. General requirements for Test Subject Performance
    4. Conduct pilot tests

III. Pre-screening Subject Interview(s)

    1. Pre-screening Patient Interview Form
    2. Pre-screning Provider Interview Form
    3. Pre-Screening Patient Summary
    4. Pre-Screening Provider Summary

Day of Testing:

IV. Activity Preparation and Documentation

  1. Pre-Activity Preparation
  2. Activity Performance Observation
  3. Documentation and Monitoring of Data Collection and Storage (support for protocol while on-site data collection using SVDA)

V. Post-activity Interview of Subjects

Data Collection and Storage:

VI. Post-Activity Data Analysis

VII. Research Documentation

VIII. Compare Instruments

IX. Post-Activity Data Summary
